Acceptance

These Terms of Use (“Terms”) govern your use of TermRoulette (the “service”), provided by the operator of TermRoulette (the “operator”). By accessing or using the service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the service.

The service

TermRoulette is a free micro-learning service that provides short explanations of various terms. The service is informal general information only. It is not a course, assessment, qualification, or professional service. Tutors may create an optional account to publish learning sets.

AI-generated content

All explanations and related learning content on the service are generated entirely by an AI language model. That content may be incomplete, outdated, inaccurate, or misleading. It is not legal, medical, financial, academic, or other professional advice. You must not rely on it as the sole basis for any decision. You are responsible for verifying information that matters to you.

Accounts

Learners do not need to register. The operator does not collect names, email addresses, or other contact details from learners. Progress may be linked to an anonymous identifier stored in your browser. If you choose to open a sync link on another device, that identifier is used to continue the same progress. The operator does not use this identifier to identify you by name or email.

Tutors may optionally create an account with an email address and password, or with Google or Apple sign-in. We send a verification email before an email-and-password account can sign in. You can add your name later from Account. Tutor accounts are used to identify published sets and to let tutors change their name and password. By registering as a tutor you confirm that the details you provide are accurate and that you will keep your sign-in details confidential.

Browser storage and cookies

For learners, the service uses your browser’s local storage to keep learning progress, bookmarks, and quiz state on this device. That storage is not a cookie and is not used to collect personal data. If you do not agree to this storage, do not use the learner features of the service.

If you sign in as a tutor, the service sets a strictly necessary session cookie so you stay signed in for up to 24 hours. That cookie stores an encrypted session token, not your password. It is not used to track learners. Details of what we collect and why are in the Privacy Policy.

Infrastructure and IP addresses

The service is hosted on third-party infrastructure. Providers such as Cloudflare may log IP addresses and other technical request data for security, abuse prevention, and reliability. The operator does not use those logs to identify learners by name or email. If you use Google or Apple to create a tutor account, those providers process the sign-in on their own terms.

Acceptable use

You may use the service only for personal, non-automated learning. You must not scrape, crawl, harvest, or otherwise extract terms, explanations, or other content by automated means, except where Irish or EU law requires that the activity be permitted (for example a text-and-data-mining exception that has not been validly reserved). You must not overload, disrupt, or interfere with the service, or circumvent its security or access controls.

Availability

The service is free and provided as available. Features, content, and availability may change or be paused at any time. The operator does not promise uninterrupted or error-free access.

Intellectual property

The site design, branding, and compilation of the service belong to the operator. You are granted a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use the service. You may not copy, republish, or redistribute content from the service at scale.

Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, the service and all content are provided without warranties of accuracy, completeness, fitness for a particular purpose, or uninterrupted availability. To that same extent, the operator and creator are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of, or reliance on, AI-generated content, or from downtime or changes to the service.

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded or limited under Irish or EU law, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for any non-waivable consumer rights.

Changes

These Terms may be updated from time to time. The date at the top is the current version. Material changes apply to your later use of the service.

Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of Ireland. If you are a consumer in the EU or EEA, you also keep any mandatory protections of the country where you live, and you may bring a claim in the courts of that country.

Operator

The service is provided by the operator of TermRoulette. How personal data is handled is described in the Privacy Policy.

Who we are

TermRoulette (the “service”) is provided by the operator of TermRoulette (the “controller”), established in Ireland. This policy explains what personal data we collect, why we collect it, and the rights you have under the GDPR and Irish data-protection law.

Two ways to use the service

Learners can use TermRoulette without an account. Tutors may optionally register so they can be identified as the author of a public set and manage their name and password.

What we collect

For learners we store an anonymous identifier in your browser after you agree to local storage, and we link learning progress, bookmarks, quiz results, and weekly stats to that identifier. We do not collect a learner’s name, email address, or other contact details.

For tutors who register we collect an email address and a password (stored only as a salted one-way hash), or an identifier from Google or Apple if you choose those sign-in buttons. Names and a public @alias can be added later. We send a one-time verification link to the email address so we can confirm it. While you are signed in we keep a hashed session token until it expires (no more than 24 hours) or you sign out.

Our hosting provider may process IP addresses and other technical request data for security, abuse prevention, and reliability.

Why we collect it and legal bases

Learner browser storage and the anonymous identifier are used so you can continue a round, keep bookmarks, and see progress. That processing is based on your consent (GDPR Art. 6(1)(a)), given through the storage notice before the learner features start.

Tutor account data is processed to create and run your tutor account, verify your email, keep you signed in, and show your public @alias on sets you publish. That processing is necessary to perform the contract you enter by registering (Art. 6(1)(b)).

Security logs, abuse prevention, and keeping hashed credentials and sessions are processed as a legitimate interest in running a secure service (Art. 6(1)(f)). The tutor session cookie is strictly necessary for the signed-in tutor area and is not used to track learners.

Cookies

Learners are not served tracking cookies. A tutor session cookie is set only after a tutor signs in. It holds an encrypted session token, is HttpOnly, and expires within 24 hours.

Who processes data for us

The service is hosted on Cloudflare, including Cloudflare Workers and the D1 database. Verification emails are sent from mail@termroulette.com through Google Workspace. If you sign in with Google or Apple, those companies process the sign-in and send us your email address and, where they provide it, your name and a stable account identifier. We do not sell personal data.

How long we keep data

Learner progress stays until you clear this browser’s storage or stop using a sync link. Tutor account data is kept while the account exists. Session tokens are deleted when they expire (within 24 hours), when you sign out, or when you change your password. Technical logs are retained by infrastructure providers according to their own periods.

Your rights

You may request access, rectification, erasure, restriction, or portability of personal data that relates to you, and you may object to processing based on legitimate interests. Learners can stop learner storage by not agreeing to the notice, or by clearing site data in the browser. Tutors can correct name details from Account. To delete a tutor account or exercise other rights, contact the operator of TermRoulette.

You also have the right to complain to the Data Protection Commission in Ireland, or to the supervisory authority where you live in the EU or EEA.

Children

Public sets may be labelled for kids, teens, or adults. Tutor registration is intended for adults who publish teaching material. Do not create a tutor account for a child.

International transfers

Cloudflare, Google, and Apple may process data outside Ireland. Where that happens, they rely on their published transfer safeguards, such as standard contractual clauses or an adequacy decision.

This policy may be updated from time to time. The date at the top is the current version. Material changes apply to your later use of the service.
